Irina Kulina
I am a third year PhD student in Mater Research Institute – University of Queensland. I initially trained as a clinician and specialised as an anaesthetist in the Intensive Care Unit in Arkhangelsk, Russia and was involved in several clinically-related research projects, before aspiring to do a PhD in research full time. At Mater Research I initially started my PhD with Prof Kerry Atkinson on his project "Utilisation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells to improve cardiac function after myocardial infarct" but due to unforeseen circumstances had to change advisory team and research area in 2012. My new research question ‘why do bones form within muscle tissues after spinal cord injury’, is a major clinical problem experienced by a third of people suffering spinal cord injury after car accidents or in war zones.
